With over 20,000 stores in  64 countries, Coffee-Mart has dominated the coffee industry since the  franchise was bought by billionaire entrepeneur Sam Martin in 2001. In  recent years Coffee-Mart has been a target of protests on issues such as  fair-trade policies, labor relations, environmental impact, political  views, and anti-competitive practices.“It’s  about time we got some more big-name corporations around here to draw  in the yuppies and their expandable incomes,” said Th’Omm (prounounced  ‘tom’) Terrell. “This is the best news since Krispy Kreme opened here  ten years ago.”While  the reaction to the coffee juggernaut coming to the community was  generally positive, it could mean trouble for the independently-owned  Coffee Joint, located just two blocks away from the new Coffee-Mart  site.
